Petros Sampras was born on August 12, 1971, in Washington, D.C. to Soterios “Sammy” and Georgia Sampras.

His mother emigrated from Sparta, Greece, whereas his father was born in the United States.  His paternal grandfather, Costas “Gus” Sampras was Greek, and his paternal grandmother, Sarah Steinberg, was Polish-Jewish.

Sampras is one of the four children his parents bore. His older brother Gus has been tournament director at the Scottsdale ATP event and later in 2007, became president of the firm managing his business activities.

His younger sister, Marion, is a teacher in Los Angeles. His older sister, is Stella Sampras, who like him, is a former professional tennis player.

Since 1996, she has been the head coach of UCLA women’s tennis. She is currently married to marketing executive Steve Webster, with whom she has twin daughters who they welcomed in 2005.
