Miguel ngel Almirón Rejala, a Paraguayan professional football player who competes for Newcastle United of the Premier League and the Paraguayan national team, was born on February 10, 1994.
He plays as an offensive midfielder or winger.
Almirón began working at Cerro Porteo before switching to Lan’s in 2015. He signed an $8 million contract with Atlanta United after winning the 2016 Argentine Primera División. He won the 2017 MLS Newcomer of the Year award and was included in the MLS Best XI for both of his seasons in Major League Soccer. Following his role in Atlanta’s MLS Cup victory in 2018, he signed for Newcastle for a club record £21 million, the largest sum ever paid for an MLS player.
Almirón joined Club Atlético Lans in Argentina’s Primera División in August 2015. After being introduced gradually by Lans manager Guillermo Barros Schelotto in his debut season, Almirón burst into the scene the following season in the truncated 2016 Argentine Primera División under Jorge Almirón. As an advanced center midfielder, Almirón was instrumental in Lans’ 2016 Argentine Primera División title success, scoring crucial goals against local rivals Banfield in the Clásico del Sur and later against San Lorenzo in the final. In August 2016, Almirón set up the only goal in Lans’ Copa Bicentenario triumph over Racing.
Miguel Almirón parents: Meet Rubén Almirón
Almirón grew up in the Asunción district of San Pablo, where his father Ruben worked 18-hour days as a security guard and his mother Sonia worked in a store.
He began training with Club 3 de Noviembre at the age of seven and trialed with other teams, but his coaches deemed him “too fragile” to become a professional footballer. His family of seven shared three bedrooms, and he had to share a bed with his mother until he was 18.
