Sondheim was born on March 22, 1930, in New York City . He is the son of Etta Janet and Herbert Sondheim. His father was a dresses manufacturer and usually manufactured clothes designed by his mother. Stephen Sondheim was born into a Jewish family. Sondheim grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Soon after his parents divorced, he was shifted to a farm near Doylestown, Pennsylvania. He is the only child of his parents.
