At the young age of 24, lightweight boxer Simiso Buthelezi, who experienced bleeding on the brain after a match in Durban over the weekend, has sadly passed away.
His death was announced by Boxing South Africa (BSA) on Wednesday, June 8.
The 10-round World Boxing Federation All-Africa bout with fellow South African Siphesihle Mntungwa on Sunday, June 5, was abruptly stopped by the referee when Buthelezi started aimlessly throwing punches in the final round.
Following the match, he was swiftly taken to the hospital and placed in an induced coma after medical examinations revealed the bleeding on the brain. Tragically, he passed away on Tuesday, June 7.
His trainer Bheki Mngomezulu stated that Buthelezi had been in perfect health leading up to the fight.
BSA also announced that an independent medical review of the incident will be conducted.
