I used to get really dressed up. I’m sure we’ve all seen slobs in hoodies and pajama pants a few times lately. What’s a guy to wear? PS I know I sound like a big, old queen.

It should be a solid color caftan, maybe in a dressy fabric if you like.
Prints are for afternoon.

My first boyfriend made me wear a tie to see RENT. I was not happy when I saw all the schlubs wearing shorts and t-shirts.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 1, 2022 3:46 AM |
Well Rent sucked, so I would have worn the same thing!!!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 1, 2022 4:02 AM |
Wear what you would wear on a plane. Unless you go on opening night.

PLEASE dress up for theater in NYC. Dress those jeans up with a jacket, or don’t wear a jacket but wear a tie you like (it might be the only time you get to wear it this year). Wear real shoes, not sneakers.

I like to dress business casual for the theater but if I'm in the neighborhood and have the whim, I won't hesitate to go for a stand-by/rush ticket even if I'm dressed for leisure.

Going to the theatre is not like going to the movies. You don't have to wear a tie, however...
Could you please just wear a pair of slacks and shoes? Does everything have to be jeans and sneakers? And looking presentable isn't confined to only Broadway shows. Please looks decent even when going to the theatre is your own city. Okay, maybe decent jeans and shoes are okay for small, local production at a community or regional theatre--but this isn't the movies. Have some respect for the actors and the production team putting on the how. And please, no goddamn shorts! Save that for the blockbuster and your popcorn at the multiplex.
The problem is, general managers and artistic directors are so afraid of losing sales that a halfway decent dress code is almost nonexistent these days. Do you wear jeans and sneakers to church? Then don't do it when going to the theatre, symphony or opera.

I don't care how anyone is dressed. I'm much more bothered by the women who come to the theater with something in those plastic bags that they leave on their lap and crinkle throughout the play. And, don't get me started about unwrapping candy..................

I guess you need to remember that in your day only 1 in 4 people at a Broadway show was a tourist, but now 3 in 4 are. So that gives a hint about the standard of clothes to be expected, given that people don't travel with sea-trunks anymore.

r9 is the only one of you I can take seriously. I remember a guy making so much noise eating his food when I saw Love, Valour, Compassion that I wanted someone to kill him (I was sitting too far away in a sold-out Broadway theatre).
And yes, he was wearing a suit jacket or blazer. I don't remember if he had on a tie.

The theater?
They dress like schmucks at the friggin’ Metropolitan Opera these days and were long before the pandemic.

OP Wear as little as possible because every millimeter of fabric makes those tiny seats feel even smaller.

R9 Someone was coughing for 10 minutes in the audience of How I Learned to Drive a few weeks back. It was really distracting.

As long as your stinky starfish is covered you should be fine.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 1, 2022 11:54 PM |
OP here…back from the show. I did wear nice pants and shoes. Lots of t shirts and cargo shorts, jeans, and a few kids dressed to kill! I loved that.

A leather thong, and a dog collar. And don't forget the thigh flask holster. Nobody will be looking at you anyway.

I always thought the requirement for men was evening dress at Broadway shows. A regular coat and tie is fine for a matinee performance.

Like hell it isn't. You go to a theater, you sit in a seat in the dark where no one can see you, then the lights come up and you exit the theater. Why some people choose to dress up for that is beyond me. I'd rather be comfortable.

Do the performers see you at the movies? Show some respect!

Have you seen what people wear to church these days? Jeans and sneakers would be a step up.

Who the fuck goes to church??

Are you a time traveler from Edith Wharton's day?

My biggest pet peeve is people who don't check their coats in winter and fill up the already tiny seats with their winter jackets, hats and scarves
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 4, 2022 3:28 AM |
I'm going somewhere nice to eat before or after, so I dress nicely. I can wear T shirts and shorts for gardening.

Just be clean (not smelly), quiet, and turn off your fucking phone.

[quote]I always thought the requirement for men was evening dress at Broadway shows.
When I made my very first visit to NYC from Fort Worth, TX back in 1993, I had tickets to see two Broadway shows (orchestra seats were $65 -- imagine that) and, not knowing any better, I packed a suit and a tie to wear for the occasion (because I just figured you dressed formally for the theater here). Well, after arriving and seeing that people dressed for Broadway the way they dressed for a Saturday afternoon at the mall, I thought "boy, was I wrong" and never took that suit out of the suitcase.

Better to be overdressed than under.
